There's still so much to share about Fairisle but

There's still so much to share about Fairisle but I just wanted to share this last bit with you for now. The last leg of the journey getting there was a 25 minute flight from Shetland. I know we've both mentioned it and it may seem that I was joking about being terrified but I truly was. I was frozen, had to remind myself to breathe and could not move my head to look out of the window. I really don't like heights.

Someone asked recently if I hadn't realised I would have to do this, but it was me that booked it!

I knew I had to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit this year. First the talk at Toasted then this trip. But I hadn't realised how genuine the fear would feel!!

So, I've had eleven days to really work on my thinking, in order to get back on the plane. I think I spent the first three wondering how else I could get home and then three more thinking of all the worse case scenarios...

But I knew I needed to address it (or stay on Fairisle). I've been doodling and writing about my experience and then adding in some positive thoughts, doing relaxation and meditation, singing 'don't worry about a thing', watching the birds swoop and sweep through the skies and imagining that freedom..

I can honestly say that although I couldn't quite manage breakfast, I got on the plane with a smile and I took videos and looked out of both windows. I even allowed myself to enjoy a moment here and there. I had a couple of wobbles when the plane bounced a bit and when we banked to the left to reach the landing strip but I have to say I'm proper pleased with myself.

Our last full day on Fairisle. A beautiful, slow, sunny day. A picnic in the shelter of the lighthouse.

Each day that the shop is open, we have got supplies needed. It's been one of the vivid things here, that you have what you need and no more.

It's the end of the earth and there is resilience, community, strength. People seem to build one another up not take each other down. They are all here out of choice, living in houses that belong to the National Trust, who is deemed to be a decent landlord.

There is hope and a desire for the island to thrive. The RSPB staff and crofting volunteers mingle with the islanders, with gentle teasing about their work. Plans are afoot for land to be protected from sheep to see what grows and islanders have fought for Marine Protected Waters to allow fish numbers to grow again. Traditional skills of carpentry, knitting and crofting are actively passed on. It's a beautiful place.

Of course, inspiring for future art projects, but also hopeful for our planet's future.

We are very grateful for the funding making this possible and to our hosts.

A day in the life of artists in residence on Fairi

A day in the life of artists in residence on Fairisle. We walked from the South lighthouse just below our house, to the North lighthouse. We went via the wee shop for supplies, leaving some in the porch for collection on our way back, when the shop would be closed.

We were invited in to Neil's to see his pristine greenhouse (a feat of engineering here on Fairisle) and garden.

Then we met @fairislewithmarie who showed us her beautiful bothy studio and introduced us to some day old lambs. The colour wall was very eye catching. All the colours of Fairisle through the year. We are only seeing it at the beginning of Spring. Marie has one place available for a knitting (machine) course in June and we'd recommend it highly!

Then, on to the North end. It was a tough walk for me as I'm not used to such hikes. We walked for 5.5 hours in total, not including the delightful and much needed coffee and picnic breaks! However, that said, it was an experience of high cliffs, great skuas, snow buntings, gannets (how I love gannets), teeny funghi in the mosses. .. Sunshine, showers and hail..

I think I prefer the South end of the island, where there are people crofting, soft curves to the land, stone walls and stiles.. to the North end, which is wilder and bleaker.. We were however higher than the plane which we saw come in and take off..

Back 'home' to light the fire, heat up soup and put bread in the oven which had been rising for the day (all courtesy of Chris), then a nap on the sofa (me) while Chris put his more eloquent thoughts onto his blog - you can read more at www.thisfragiletent.com..

Then I stirred myself to keep up my daily challenge of a sketch a day. I've also been drawing the birds we've seen. I think we're at almost thirty varieties while we've been here, many pointed out to us yesterday as we walked with the RSPB warden.
