Description
Raku jewellery is a joy to make and we think you will enjoy wearing these. Each one is unique and inspired by the earth we live and commune on. You can choose which piece you like best by checking the images – each piece of card has the name of the brooch in the bottom left corner.
The brooches are 4cm diameter.
How we make our ceramic raku brooches
Each brooch is made of layers of textured clay. They are first cut, then textured, dried and fired in the electric kiln. Then they are fired in a raku kiln, (raku meaning ‘easy’ in Japanese) – a process by which pottery is heated quickly to around 1000 degrees using a gas burner, then placed in a reduction bin (a sealed metal bin containing combustible material.) By controlling the amount of oxygen reaching the glazes, we can produce a range of different colours (although much of this is also down to chance!).
‘Seatree elemental’ refers to a range of ceramics using darker clays and fired outdoors – each piece is hand built and unique. These pieces have emerged as a way for us to explore our relationship to all that is broken and all that is beautiful in this world shadowed by climate injustice. Just like our other work, you will see a colour spectrum inspired by the wild western fringe of Scotland.
