Description
Beyond the reach of neon – that feeling of being so far away from city lights – perfect peace.
The words on this pottery picture are from a recent poem by Chris. Michaela took the words and created an image on the clay reflecting the beautiful croft on Fair Isle that they recently stayed in. What beauty and life on that place, portrayed using underglazes and a hint of glaze. Every piece we make is unique and is a combination of words and images.
How we made this ceramic picture
The poetry lines were drawn in and the letters stamped into the stoneware clay square, before the picture was dried, then fired to 1000 degrees. The letters are stamped in using individual stamps and we use the poetry to sweep across the ceramic artwork, to add to the feeling of freedom. Once fired, called the biscuit firing, and cooled, we then added black underglaze to pick out the lines and letters. That gives us our outlines and we then added colour – soft hues – and the picture was fired again to 1240 degrees. It’s two days before the kiln cools enough to open and then Chris made the bespoke frame, which measures 19.5cm square. There is a metal hook on the back to make hanging easy.
A lot of love went into this pictures! We think you would love it too.
