Description
The words on this ceramic artwork are from a beautiful poem by Chris, which reads:
The horizon rises
Rust and golden
There is mild steel in the sky
But the curl of the sea still smiles at me
This light falls kindly on the eye
A cold north wind unfurls the coat flags
Slapping a lovely laugh on the side of her face
Peat smoke clouds my watered eyes
Our ship makes landfall
In a harbour embrace
As always, each piece is a combination of work and creativity from both Chris and Michaela and in this instance, Michaela has printed in the poetry and the pottery picture is enhanced by a sketch of a boat against a harbour wall – a fishing boat we regularly see here in the Clyde, but pictured in the way Michaela remembers the neat little harbour on the east coast in Dunbar, with dark and stormy skies all around.
How we made this ceramic picture.
The clay is stoneware and the letters are stamped in while the clay is still wet and the lines drawn in by a sharp stick. It is dried slowly between plasterboard and then fired. The colours added in this artwork are gentle, some underglazes, some soft glazes, to enhance the words. Once fired, the piece was framed by Chris and the colours lifted by the white painted frame.
(framed size 33.5cm x 30cm, depth 4cm)
