Poetry picture; To you whose hope seems stolen
Poetry picture; To you whose hope seems stolen
A ceramic triptych featuring original poetry. Each part is made by impressing words and images into a slab of raw stone-ware clay, before air-drying and firing in the kiln. Next, the bisc-hard slabs are glazed using both under glazes and overglazes to create this unique piece of art. The piece is framed in a waxed wooden frame, with painted mounting. 34 by 33 cm.   We made this piece during the pandemic 'lock down', when it seemed as if all of our futures were uncertain, but the poem featured actually comes from an advent project (this one). We made the piece as a way of reaching out beyond the troubles of our times towards hope. Here is the poem in full;   Starlight   To you whose hope Seems stolen Know this tender thing; The bruised old sky above you (Which seems to yawn indifference) Is, in fact, leaking light.   Particles tumble down Like this promise; I am here Where you are   For I know what you know I see what you see The fences you built are no protection From starlight   My stars leave no shadow And in this gentle light Shy things Become possible.

Poetry picture; Trinity
Poetry picture; Trinity
Hand made ceramic tryptich, featuring an original poem by Chris Goan. This piece emerged from the first lock-down of 2020, when for what seemed like the first time ever, we all just stopped. In the blink of an eye, our lives changed. In the midst of much suffering, the rest of us had both the opportunity and perhaps the obligation to think again about the way we live, for the sake of the planet and of future generations. 43 by 32 cm.   The three slabs of clay used here suggest a process of metamorphasis, as colours merge and shift. (The middle slab is actually made of clay that has been marbled.) Here is the poem in full;   "In the old way of thinking change comes through Great Love, or   Great Suffering, but both are hard. both will break us apart, if we let them.   then (like third part of trinity) came the Great Silence

Poetry bowl (goodness that rises)
Poetry bowl (goodness that rises)
This lovely bow incorporates original poetry by Chris. The wet clay is rolled out to the correct thickness and the design is drawn on, along with the hand-stamped letters. For the first drying stage the bowl is dried in a mold while protected so it doesn't dry to quickly and crack. Once it has started drying it is taken out of the bowl, very carefully as this is when it is at it's most delicate. Once finally dry the bowl is fired then glazed and fired again. The poem featured in this bowl is about interconnectedness.   The bowl has a 16 cm diameter.
